What would it be like to explore, process, and even learn to embrace our grief in community? Grounded in one of the five gates of grief presented by Francis Weller in The Wild Edge of Sorrow, we will express the individual and collective grief we experience for our world through the art of collage. Whatever it is that you are grieving about our changing world, come explore those feelings in this creative, communal space.

All materials will be provided. No prior collage experience needed. You need only bring a willingness to join in a community of compassionate support and creation.

This class is taught by Jackie Proulx (she/her), a Vermont-based artist, educator, and University of Vermont certified death doula. Through her business The Space Between, Jackie offers personalized direct doula support, community death education, and art workshops exploring different types of grief. Join Rae Newell for a 10 week exploration in oil and acrylic painting. Rae brings to The MINT decades of painting and art instruction and we are very excited to have her! This class is open to adults and is hosted in our Jr MINT room at 112 Quality Lane.

Students should bring their favorite brushes, paints, pallet, and canvas.

If you are looking for supplies, please check out The MINT's Creative Reuse Shop, reMake, at 72 Merchants Row in downtown Rutland or Kaleidoscope Arts on Center Street also in Downtown. Rae will also have items on hand for things that get left at home.

Textured Metal Earrings

An introduction to texturing metal using stamps and hammers to create designs for earrings.

Students will take home a pair of handmade earrings while learning the skills to continue making jewelry on their own!

What you'll learn:

How to use metal stamps and hammers, metal blocks, dabbing blocks, and sandpaper.
Safety and proper use of tools
This class will include an Orientation to the shop that will allow participants to use the shop on their own after completion*

Safety guidelines for attendance:

Wear eye protection and masks provided by instructor when using certain tools during the construction of a jewelry piece.

Wear closed-toed shoes, tie back hair, and do not wear clothing or jewelry that can become caught in machinery or around equipment.

Mosaic is a form of art that uses small pieces of glass, stone, or tile to create a design. Micromosaics is exactly this, just smaller! (tiny enough to make usable / wearable items)

Mosaics-extraordinaire and Mint Member Jennifer will walk you through how to apply custom mosaics to your own wine or similarly stemmed glass.

Please bring one or more wine glass, margarita glass, or similar (anything with a stem!) to decorate to the class day-of.

(Wine / stemmed glasses will not be provided at this event.)

Just in time for Halloween costume-making! Learn the basics of how to use a sewing machine - threading, bobbins, tension, and more. This is a fun, casual, and informal class for all skill levels.

In the second half of class, students will have the chance to put their new knowledge to use by following along to create a small sewing project. If you have your own sewing machine you'd like to bring to learn on, feel free.

We will have machines available for use. Registration is highly encouraged for this event to help us know how many machines will be needed.

Get started in the Jewelry Shop!

for current Mint Members

Join us for a Jewelry Shop Orientation focused on safety & proper use of equipment that will allow you to utilize the Jewelry Shop afterwards.

The Jewelry Shop Orientation will include safety basics, flex drill, torches/tanks, pickling, polisher, saws/blades, disc cutter, and care/ maintenance of tools and equipment.

This is a Shop Orientation only and not project based, you will not make anything in this session. Once complete you will be able to use the Shop on your own.

Time: 5-6pm Orientation / 6-6:30pm Q&A + project help

Safety: Please wear closed toed shoes, natural fiber clothing, tie back long hair, no loose clothing or jewelry that can get caught in equipment.

Woodshop Orientation & Basic Tool Use

The Woodshop Orientation is designed to ensure that all members understand The Mint’s woodshop policies, procedures, and expectations for maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming shared workspace. Participants will learn about shop safety, proper cleanup, dust collection, material restrictions, tool care, and the responsibilities that come with using a community woodshop.

During the class, participants will also learn or demonstrate the safe and proper use of the primary woodworking tools available for member use. The goal is to make sure everyone has the knowledge and confidence needed to work safely and independently in the shop, whether you are an experienced woodworker or completely new to woodworking.

As a bonus, everyone will put those skills to work by making their own custom piece (spatula, cheeseboard, etc.) to take home. This simple hands-on project provides an opportunity to practice several of the techniques covered during the orientation while creating something useful.

No previous woodworking experience is required.

This orientation is intended for all members who would like to use The Mint woodshop independently. By the end of this class, you’ll have both a handcrafted wooden piece and the skills needed to independently and safely use The MINT’s woodshop.

Come on everybody—let's make some sawdust!

What You’ll Learn

In this class, you’ll master the safe operation of:

Compound Miter Saw (Chopsaw): For precise crosscuts and angled cuts.
SawStop Table Saw: For ripping boards to size with advanced safety features.
Jointer and Planer: For creating smooth, flat, and uniform surfaces.
Hand Tools and Measuring Techniques: Learn the basics of shaping, sanding, and measuring for a polished finish.

Safety First

No prior experience is necessary! We’ll provide all the guidance and tools you need. Bring your own safety glasses/ ear protection if you prefer, or borrow a pair from us.

Introduction to letterpress, and the joy of designing and printing wet ink on paper.

A hands on class to learn the process of letterpress printing. Attendees will be guided through the entire process of planning, preparing a chase with printing blocks, setting up a table top press, inking up a press, and making prints.

You will experience all the stages of creating a simple print, how to safely operate the printing equipment, and how to clean up.

Fused Glass Holiday Tree Ornaments

Fused glass ornaments are great small pieces of art to decorate any holiday tree or for gift giving. In this class you will make holiday tree ornaments based on my custom ornament template in glimmering Coe 90 glass. Replicate my design or create your own tree trimming design.

You will learn:

Glass preparation for fusing
How to use basic glass tools for glass cutting and pattern layering
Kiln overview, glass technology and safety
Creation and Use of cutting templates for design layouts
Use of glass rods and frit to add texture to your projects.

This class is good for beginners and intermediate glass artists. Ages 16 and up.

Drilled ornaments will be full fused after class and picked up following week.

Fused Glass Ornaments

Fused glass ornaments are great small pieces of art to decorate any holiday tree or for gift giving.

You will learn:

Glass preparation for fusing
How to use basic glass tools for cutting and pattern layering
Kiln overview, glass technology and safety
Use of glass rods and frit to add texture to your projects.

Ornaments will be full fused after class and available for pick up following week.

SawStop Table Saw: For ripping boards to size with advanced safety features.
Jointer and Planer: For creating smooth, flat, and uniform surfaces.
Hand Tools and Measuring Techniques: Learn the basics of shaping, sanding, and measuring for a polished finish.

Safety First

No prior experience is necessary! We’ll provide all the guidance and tools you need. Bring your own safety glasses/ ear protection if you prefer, or borrow a pair from us.

About the Class

Introduction to letterpress, and the joy of designing and printing wet ink on paper.

You will experience all the stages of creating a simple print, how to safely operate the printing equipment, and how to clean up.

No prerequisites, or material fees. Printing blocks, paper, and ink will be provided.

You will be able to keep any prints you create.

What You’ll Learn

How to set up and operate a letterpress independently.
Techniques to enhance your existing letterpress skills.
Tips and tricks for achieving precision and creativity in your designs.

What to Bring

Your creativity and any specific ideas or designs you’d like to work on.
All tools and materials will be provided.
