This class provides the fundamental skills and materials knowledge you'll need for future projects in jewelry and metalsmithing. Students will receive:

  • An introduction to basic metals (copper, brass, nickel, silver, gold) and their characteristics
  • Up-close demonstrations of basic techniques: sawing, filing, sanding, texturing, stamping and polishing
  •  An overview of our metalsmithing equipment:  bench pin, jeweler's saws and files, disccutter, acetylene torch, propane and oxygen torch (with flux coating and pickle bath), flexshaft and attachments, rolling mill, ring bender, dapping blocks (dome and u-channel), steel block, punches, stamping tools, ring stretcher, a variety of hammers, and the buffers and polishes
  • Lots of hands-on practice and time for Q & A
  • In addition, each student will make and take home a small, personalized charm or ring designed in their choice of metal and pattern.

This beginner's class is for anyone interested in the art of metal smithing to use in jewelry making or in any fine metalworking project or application. This tool training is required before members can use the Jewelry Studio (all equipment including hand tools).
