    Introduction to the MINT Woodshop: Create Your Own Wooden Spatula

    Come on everybody—let's make some sawdust!

    Take a tour through the woodshop and get hands-on experience with some of the most commonly used woodworking tools. This orientation is perfect for beginners and also fulfills the requirements to become independently certified to use the woodshop during member hours.

    As part of the class, you’ll create your very own wooden spatula—a fun and approachable project that introduces you to the essential tools and techniques of woodworking.

    What You’ll Learn

    In this class, you’ll master the safe operation of:

    • Compound Miter Saw (Chopsaw): For precise crosscuts and angled cuts.
    • SawStop Table Saw: For ripping boards to size with advanced safety features.
    • Jointer and Planer: For creating smooth, flat, and uniform surfaces.
    • Hand Tools and Measuring Techniques: Learn the basics of shaping, sanding, and measuring for a polished finish.

    Safety First

    No prior experience is necessary! We’ll provide all the guidance and tools you need. Bring your own safety glasses if you prefer, or borrow a pair from us.

    Woodshop: Introduction to the Lathe

    Class Overview: This 3-hour Wood Lathe Orientation class is designed to introduce beginners to the essential skills and safety protocols needed to operate a wood lathe confidently and effectively. The class will cover foundational knowledge, the parts and functions of the lathe, essential safety practices, and basic turning techniques. By the end of the class, students will have a clear understanding of how to set up, operate, and maintain a lathe, preparing them for independent practice in the shop.

    Class Objectives:

    • Understand the basic components and functions of a wood lathe.

    • Learn how to safely set up and operate the lathe.

    • Develop essential wood-turning skills such as shaping, sanding, and finishing.

    • Practice basic turning techniques to start building familiarity with the lathe.

    Class Details:

    Date: Monday, April 28th

    Time: 5:30pm- 8:30pm

    Cost: $45

    Materials Provided:

    • Wood for practice (how to prep your materials)

    • PPE (safety goggles, ear protection, dust masks)

    • Lathe tools and equipment for use during class

    Prerequisites:

    • Woodshop orientation required (this could have been through a previous intro class).

    • This class is designed for beginners or those new to using a wood lathe.

    By the end of the class, participants will have the foundational knowledge needed to continue practicing and developing their skills on their own.
