Building a George Nakashima Style Bench

In this 8 week intensive course, you will create your very own Conoid

Bench in the style of George Nakashima. The second week we will take a field trip to select your bench slab material (this will be a separate charge of about $200-$400 that is not included in your registration fee).

Using appropriate power and hand tools, students will be guided to fashion all component parts, from raw wood, necessary to create a correctly executed Nakashima style bench.  Students will learn design considerations as well as construction and finishing techniques necessary to complete their bench.

The class will consist of eight 6 hr sessions on consecutive Saturdays.  Please make sure you can attend classes as new skills will be taught each week and the time in class is necessary for completing the bench.

    Learning Objectives:

-design and build your own conoid bench

-learn how to safely use the lathe

-learn how to shave and taper spindles with a spoke shave
