    Introduction to Mosaics - Bird Houses

    Spring is coming!  Join us for this fun project creating a beautiful  Mosaic Birdhouse.  This are not only beautiful, they are functional and suitable for outdoor use by your feathered friends.

    This is a three-part class: March 20, March 27, and April 3, 5p-8p

    Session 1: how to prepare the birdhouse substrate, how to create a design and select tesserae for your project, how to select an appropriate adhesive

    Session 2:  how to build your design

    Session 3:  How to grout and finish your birdhouse

      Cost (includes materials)

      Introduction to Stained Glass

      Join maker Lisa Steckler for a demonstration and an introduction to our Stained Glass shop!

      In this class you will leave knowing:

      • How to cut and shape glass
      • How to use soldering irons on copper foil to join different glass pieces in a design
      • How to add a simple eye loop to a piece
      • All safety procedures for use of equipment and materials in the shop

      This beginner class will get your foot in the door of the Stained Glass shop. In order to work independently in Stained Glass, you will need this foundational course.

      Please wear close-toed shoes if you plan to attend this class.

      Cost: $35.00 for members, $55.00 for not-yet members.

      Glass Fusing: Curved Table Sconce

      Join us in this introductory class creating square designs that will eventually be curved and will be perfect in front of a candle! 


      No Prerequisites needed

      This introductory class will teach you the basic knowledge and skills needed to begin learning glass fusing. You will learn how to work safely, use tools.

      and you will create one piece that can be picked up within 2 weeks after they come out of the kiln. You will learn about COE(coefficient of expansion)of glass,  kiln firing, and how to choose glass and prepare it for firing. 


      By the end of this class, you will know:

      *  How to cut glass 

      *  What COE means and why it is relevant to this work

      *  How to achieve different glass effects with different firing schedules

      *  How to respect the glass and related science to get the best fusing results

      MOSAIC TABLES

      This is an introductory course.  In this 4 session course we will explore mosaic tabletops.  Substrates are widely available and quite diverse.  You will learn to select appropriate substrates, adhesive and grouting techniques suitable for an outdoor table.  Feel free to bring your own table or select from a variety of tables available at the Mint.  


      Course objectives:

      1.  Learn how to select a table and substrate, suitable for Vermont weather.

      2. Learn how to plan and create a tabletop work of art.

      3.  Learn how to maintain a level surface.

      4.  Learn how to grout and finish your project.

      *Please note that this course takes place in the glass shop on the south end of the building, please take the second right, and enter the building through the side door.

      The sky is the limit when creating your own stained glass honeycomb suncatcher!

      Using different colored and textured glass, arrange your hexagon pieces in a pattern of your choosing. Complete your piece with tiny bee charm. Perfect for a sunny window in your home or as a great gift for your loved one.

      In this 2-session class you will learn how to:

      • Choose complementary colors
      • Cut glass to a specific size and shape from a pattern
      • Apply foil to the glass for soldering
      • Solder the glass pieces together
      • Add hooks for hanging
      • Patina the solder to give it a finished look

      No stained glass experience necessary.
