Torch Fired Enameling - Advanced

In this 3-hour workshop, participants will make a pair of enameled earrings or pendant. The process will include deciding on enamel colors, choosing a design element and embellishments, and firing at the torch station. Participants will then finish their projects by adding complementary beads, forming twisted loops in wire, and attaching ear hooks and/or jump rings.

Students will learn:

  • Safety using enamel products and torches
  • Forming, sanding, cleaning, and prepping base metal
  • Choosing enamel colors, designs, stencils, embellishments, and using crackle enamels.
SAFETY considerations:
  • Enamel is fine mesh glass particles that can (and will) become airborne during the sifting process. If you are unable or unwilling to wear a mask, you cannot participate in this class. N95 are preferred, but a cloth or surgical mask would do fine.
  • We’ll be using a MAPP gas torch, which will reach temperatures above 1,000 degrees. Participants should be comfortable with the idea of holding and firing a torch.
  • We will be using LEAD FREE enamels; however, there are other chemical exposure considerations to using and firing enamel.
  • To prevent getting hurt from rough edges, participants may want to wear a pair of tight-fitting gloves to handle/cut copper stock.

Participants should bring:

  • N95 mask, or another mask. (mandatory)
  • Gloves that allow nimble fingers (optional)
  • Creativity and inspiration
