Teen Pottery Club: Volume 1

Come join us for some continuing pottery education! This class is designed to be a continuation of previous pottery classes offered at the MINT. Some experience/ enrollment in previous courses is required. This course is open to students aged 12-15 who have an interest in expanding their pottery experience. This is the second of 4 sessions that will all focus on mastering fundamental principles of pottery. In this session we will be focused on creating mugs using several different methods and techniques.

Learning Objectives

January 

Focus on mugs

Students will learn or re-learn the fundamentals of the wheel. We will focus on safe operating habits, centering the clay, appropriate thickness/ drying and throwing a basic cylinder.

Focus on mugs

Students will learn when and how to trim their pottery on the wheel, how to dry pieces to prevent cracking and how to pull and attach handles to leather hard clay. Students will also learn how to roll a slab and construct a pinch pot.

Students will learn how to glaze their pottery. We will cover principles of both brush and dip glazes as well as the basics of glaze layering.

Students will get to see a kiln being unloaded and be introduced to kiln safety practices and operation. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different kinds of tea from a special guest, and the program will be rounded out with a “tea party” in the handmade mugs.
