Soil with Soul: Build a Worm Bin & Upcycle Your Food Scraps

Aristotle called worms the “intestines of the earth.” These humble, misunderstood creatures have a bad reputation for being gross and slimy but that is simply not the case. They are important players in the decomposition of organic matter. What they leave behind after feasting on decaying matter is what gardeners and farmers call “black gold.” Like cow manure, vermicast (aka worm poop) is a highly prized soil amendment rich with nutrients and microbes that plants and soil love. We know you will too, so let’s compost your food scraps with worms!

In this three-day workshop, you will

    • build a three-tier vertical migration worm bin; each tier will be 12” x 12” (1 sq. ft. of surface area)

    • learn how this three-tier system operates and how to start it using worms specific for composting

    • methods for caring and feeding your worms, such as maintaining optimal temperatures, moisture percentages, and healthy Ph-level, as well as balancing the carbon to nitrogen ratio

    • when and how to harvest vermicast

    • applications for vermicast, for example, using it to top dress house plants or making a compost tea for your garden

Each participant will receive bedding material, 1 pound of composting worms, worm chow, and a worm blanket to start their home system.

    Cost
    Members: $225
    Non-members: $300

How does color manipulate you into buying more, eating more, feeling energized or relaxed?  How can we all take advantage of these effects?  Join Austin Bach, MINT member and Maine College of Art grad to get the low-down on how color influences us.  While this class builds on Color Theory 1 and Color Theory 2, Theory 1 and 2 are not prerequisites for this class.

We will explore the effect that color has on our mood and the feelings/mantra/archetypes associated with colors. We'll also discuss how corporations utilize this phenomenon to manipulate unsuspecting individuals. Students will utilize laser cut stencils to screenprint brand logos onto T-shirts to showcase a brand logo in a color that distorts the archetype associated with the company.  Please bring your own white or light grey t-shirt.
